Note of the Month: Kuwait 5 Dinars
Posted on 2/24/2026
Country: Kuwait
Catalog Number: 4
Date: 1960 (ND 1961)
Denomination: 5 Dinars
Varieties: The PMG Population Report also lists 'cts' for Color Trial Specimens and 's' for Specimens.
What makes it special? This note was among the first issued by Kuwait, which gained its independence on June 19, 1961. Due to the heat, Kuwait celebrates its National Day instead on February 25, the anniversary of the coronation of Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah in 1950 as sheikh. Pictured on the front of this note, he went on to serve as first emir of Kuwait from 1961 until his death in 1965.
Did you know? The word "dinar" is used by several countries in the Arab world (as well as Serbia and North Macedonia) for their currency. The word can be traced to the Latin word denarius, a silver coin used for centuries by the Romans.
Total graded by PMG: As of mid-February 2026, the PMG Population Report includes 1,318 examples of Pick# 4, 3 examples of Pick# 4cts and 2 examples of Pick# 4s.
