What makes it special? Chulalongkorn, or Rama V (1853-1910), presided over a remarkable period of social reform in Siam, known today as Thailand. Ascending to the throne in 1868 when he was just 15 years old, he sought to bring Western principles to his country while combatting Western attempts to colonize Siam. Known as the country’s modernizing monarch, the abolition of slavery in Thailand is considered among his greatest achievements.

Rama V may be best known in the West by the fictionalized character of King Mongkut’s son in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “The King and I,” which was adapted into a 1956 film that won five Academy Awards.

The front of this 1,000 Baht note features a portrait of King Rama IX, the ruler when it was issued. The back of the note features images representing Rama V, including his equestrian statue at the Royal Plaza monument, The Ananda Samakhom Throne Hall and the end-of-slavery declaration.

Did you know? Revered in Thai culture for the reforms he instituted and his work to ensure his country’s freedom, King Rama V is honored every year on October 23 — Chulalongkorn Day — a public holiday commemorating the anniversary of his death in 1910.
