What makes it special? This note celebrates Viola Desmond, who is sometimes compared to civil rights leader Rosa Parks in the United States. Desmond was arrested in November 1946 when she refused to leave a whites-only section of a Nova Scotia theater. She received a posthumous pardon in April 2010.

Did you know? March is Women's History Month, and Desmond is the first Canadian-born woman to appear on a Canadian banknote. She is also the first Black person to appear on her own Canadian note. The back of the note shows the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Total graded by PMG: As of March 2023, the PMG Population Report includes over 1,638 examples of BC-77a (including 98 with the First Releases designation) and 28 examples of BC-77b.

Sales highlights: In December 2022, a BC-77a graded PMG 70★ Gem Uncirculated EPQ sold for $862 through World Banknote Auctions. Over a dozen other examples in lower grades have sold for less than $50 through World Banknote Auctions
