Country: Sweden
Catalog Number: 52e
Date: 1980-90
Denomination: 10 Kronor
Varieties: Sweden Pick# 52 comes in a-e varieties with dates ranging from 1963-1990. Varieties a, b, and c are distinguished by letterpress-printed dates in a dark red color. The d and e varieties have pale red dates printed by offset. The d and e varieties are further broken down into engraved signatures (d) and offset signatures (e).

What makes it special? The 10-krona notes of Pick# 52 were the last of this denomination to be printed, as the Riksbank introduced a 10-krona coin in 1991 and ended production of the notes.

Why is it interesting now? The snowflake design on the reverse of the note evokes images of winter, which begins on December 21st in the northern hemisphere. The colder climates are already experiencing the snowy winter weather that inspired the note’s design (though not us here at PMG headquarters in Florida!).

Did you know? A traditional symbol in Scandinavia and Northern Europe is the Yule Goat. Originally, Yule Goat was the name given to the last sheaf of grain bundled in a harvest and was saved for Yule celebrations. It was considered to contain the spirit of the harvest and to hold magical properties. A modern-day manifestation of Yule Goat tradition occurs in the town of Gävle, Sweden, where each year at Christmas-time, a giant straw goat is constructed in the town square. The tallest goat was built in 1993 and measured 49 feet, earning it a place in the Guinness Book of Records. The Gävle goats are famous for being burned down, and despite additional security measures being implemented by the town (including fireproofing, fences, camera surveillance, and guards), the goat has been burned or damaged 37 times since the tradition began in 1966. Let's all hope that this year's goat survives to see the New Year!
