What makes it special? This banknote celebrates Admiral Horatio Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, which happened October 21, 1805. Nelson led a British fleet against a joint French-Spanish one during the Napoleonic wars. He was mortally wounded, but his victory helped ensure Great Britain's control of the seas.

Did you know? Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory that was ceded as part of the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. It is strategically located near the southern tip of Spain and the western end of the Mediterranean Sea. It had an important role in the Battle of Trafalgar, which occurred about 25 miles west. The back of the note shows Nelson's flagship, the HMS Victory, returning to Gibraltar.

Sales highlights: Heritage Auctions sold a Pick# 27a graded PMG 67 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ in April 2018 for $114. Stack's Bowers sold one also graded PMG 67 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ in May 2021 for $95.
