What makes it special? The note features a polar bear, an arctic animal associated with winter, which begins Dec. 21. Polar bears live in the world’s northernmost countries: Greenland, Russia, Canada, the United States (Alaska) and Norway (Svalbard). They are considered a vulnerable species.

Did you know? The capital of Greenland is Nuuk, which gets only 4 hours and 6 minutes of daylight on the winter solstice (Dec. 21). In the northern town of Qaanaaq, the sun set on Oct. 27 and won't rise again until Feb. 13!
