What makes it special? Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. (November 27, 1932 to August 21, 1983) is revered in the Philippines for his dedication to democracy and to peace. A journalist-turned-politician who served as a senator of the Philippines, he was a leader in the opposition to the rule of Ferdinand Marcos.

“Ninoy’s” pro-democracy work led to his imprisonment for eight years. His sentence was commuted when he became ill and was granted permission to travel to the United States for heart surgery. When he flew home on August 21, 1983, he was shot and killed after getting off the airplane. His death touched off massive demonstrations against Marcos and lead to the People Power Revolution of 1986 and the eventual election of his widow, Corazon Aquino, as president.

The anniversary of his death is commemorated with a national holiday.
