What makes it special? Of all the catalog numbers for Turkmenistan in the PMG Population Report, this is easily the most numerous. The front of it shows Saparmurat Niyazov, who was the first president of Turkmenistan, ruling from 1991 to 2006, when he died of a heart attack.

Did you know? Turkmenistan declared its independence on October 27, 1991, the day Niyazov took power. He instituted a Latin-based alphabet for his country as well as a personality cult based on himself, but kept the centrally planned economy from the Soviet era.
