PMG's Featured Note of the Month: Belgium 200 Francs

For International Jazz Day, we’re spotlighting a note that pays tribute to the saxophone and its inventor.

Varieties: The PMG Population Report records Specimens (148s).

What makes it special? The front of the note shows Adolphe Sax, a Belgian musician, and the saxophone, which Sax invented in the 1840s. People playing the saxophone are shown on the back of the note. The saxophone has become strongly associated with jazz music, and International Jazz Day is celebrated on April 30.

Did you know? In addition to the saxophone, Sax invented other instruments, including the saxotromba, saxhorn and saxtuba. He also developed innovations for the bass clarinet, bugle and clarinet. Sax was born in Dinant, and the front of the note portrays the city, highlighted by the belltower of the Collegiate Church of Notre Dame de Dinant.
