PMG Registry Featured Set: Suriname

Posted on 11/25/2025

Fifty years ago, the South American nation gained its independence; this set shows notes from before and after this milestone.

Last month we featured a set from Indonesia, and this month we're spotlighting another former Dutch colony: Suriname. As that nation marks the 50th anniversary of its independence, we take a look at the most popular related category in the PMG Registry: Suriname, 1906-Date, Type Set, Issued Notes. There, we find ColonialCoinsUK's Suriname, P60 to date set leading the way with 36 notes out of the challenging 110-note set.

The set is powered by a complete set of the bird series from 2000 (Pick# 146 to 154), all with images, meaning you can enjoy them as part of the set's slideshow here. These are led by a Suriname, Centrale Bank 2000 25,000 Gulden graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ. The birds on the notes include (from the lowest denomination to the highest): red-necked woodpecker; black-throated mango; white-throated toucan; long-tailed hermit; Guianan cock-of-the-rock; royal flycatcher; sun parakeet; ornate hawk-eagle; and spectacled owl. (For fans of these bird notes, the PMG Registry has a category just for them here.)

The set also includes a 1942 Zilverbon 1 Gulden graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated, which is surpassed by a mere seven examples in the PMG Population Report. Thank you, ColonialCoinsUK, for sharing this fascinating set from South America with the PMG Registry community!
