PMG Registry Featured Set: Indonesia

Posted on 10/21/2025

To mark 80 years since the beginning of the Rupiah, here's a fascinating set from the world's fourth-most-populous country.

Following liberation from the Japanese at the end of World War II in 1945, the newly proclaimed Republic of Indonesia engaged in a war for independence from the Netherlands, winning international recognition four years later. Eighty years ago this month, the Republic announced a new currency called the Rupiah. To mark the occasion, we're putting a spotlight on a PMG Registry set that celebrates the fascinating history of the Rupiah: Ian Yan’s Indonesia Complete 1945-Date Set 1.

The set begins with 1945 1, 5 and 10 Sen and 1/2 Rupiah notes that all bear the date of October 17, 1945, when the Rupiah was proclaimed. It also includes a 1949 100 New Rupiah that was issued amid a currency revaluation by the Indonesian government as it gained international acceptance.

The set is 60% complete and encompasses 100 notes in all, up through the Indonesia 2017 100,000 Rupiah. Ian Yan has included images for all the notes in this set, meaning the slideshow is an excellent walk through the history of the Rupiah. Thank you, Ian Yan, for sharing your amazing collection with the PMG community.

Indonesia is the sixth-largest category in the PMG Population Report, with more than 100,000 notes graded. In addition, collectors have built more than 100 Indonesia sets in the PMG Registry, and you can explore them here.
