IDhorace has taken a unique approach to collecting with this interesting set of 37 obsolete notes from around the 1860s, prior to the end of the Civil War in 1865. With a wide range of notes from North Carolina, Florida and Louisiana, among others, the set offers lovely examples of obsolete currency from Southern state banks and private issuers. This collector offers a personal glimpse into his passion for these notes:

“…I began collecting a few raw notes from Louisiana, Texas, and Virginia about 5 years ago. As these things often go, I began to find a few more from other states that were interesting for one reason or another, and therefore, the set just grew… Aside from the beauty and quality of some of these notes, the ones I especially appreciate are the ones that have vignettes showing the family and farm scenes…”

Louisiana, New Orleans 1860s $10 - Citizens' Bank of Louisiana graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated

Many notes in this set are snapshots of daily life at that time in each specific state. Each piece offers a different theme, color scheme and issuer. There are depictions of farm life, harvesting, horses, ships on turbulent seas, railroads, battle scenes, trade, female figures, etc. The denominations vary as well, from 25-cent notes all the way to 50-dollar notes. Be sure to check out his photo gallery here for some interesting examples from state banks and issuers such as the Selma, Marion and Memphis Railroad Company, New Orleans Canal & Banking Company, and Cotton Pledged currency from Mississippi.

Thank you, IDhorace, for sharing this set — a slice of American history — for all the PMG collecting community to enjoy. We look forward to seeing what other treasures you may add to this set in the future.
