High-Denomination Error Note Graded by PMG Featured in Trigometric Sale

Posted on 10/7/2021

The Malaysian auction showcases PMG-certified rarities from Southeast Asia and elsewhere.

Hundreds of banknotes graded by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) will be featured in an upcoming Trigometric sale, which takes place in four sessions October 22-25, 2021. Online bidding is now underway for all sessions.

The top rarity in the sale is a PMG-certified high-denomination Malaysian banknote with a visually stunning error. The Malaysia, Bank Negara ND (1976-81) 1,000 Ringgit graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated EPQ with a Missing Print Error notation (Session 2, lot 1203) is lacking significant elements on the front of the note. These include writing down the center, including the denomination name “SERIBU RINGGIT”, as well as the portrait of Tuanku Abdul Rahman, the first leader of the Federation of Malaya. This fascinating error note has an estimate of RM290,000 to RM500,000 (about $69,000 to $120,000 USD).

Another 1,000 Ringgit note, a ND (1982-84) Specimen graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated, is part of a two-note lot (Session 2, lot 1353) with an estimate of RM110,000 to RM150,000 (about $26,000 to $36,000 USD). The lot also includes a Malaysia, Bank Negara ND (1982-84) 500 Ringgit Specimen graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated.

On the front of each note is a serial number of all zeroes and the word “CONTOH” — which means Specimen in the Malay language. Malaysia retired both of these high denominations in 1999 to curtail money laundering.

The front of both the 500 and 1,000 Ringgit Specimens feature the portrait of Tuanku Abdul Rahman dressed in traditional apparel. The back of the 500 Ringgit note features the former Supreme Court building, while the back of the 1,000 Ringgit note features a panoramic view of the Bangunan Parliament building, another Kuala Lumpur landmark.
