Fascinating Collection of PMG-certified US Notes Offered in September

Posted on 8/27/2021

The Heritage Auctions sale includes more than 800 PMG-certified rarities, including experimental Silver Certificates.

A rare 1935A Experimental Silver Certificate is among over 800 notes graded by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) that are being offered in an upcoming sale. Online bidding is already underway for Heritage Auctions’ Ferryville Collection Currency Showcase Auction 62199, which will be held September 19, 2021.

The top note in the sale offers a glimpse into the history of US paper money. The 1935A Experimental (R) $1 Silver Certificate Replacement Note graded PMG 30 Very Fine (lot 96275) dates to a time when concerns were rising about counterfeit money. The US government tried experiments involving special paper, including one in June 1944, in which over 2 million 1935A $1 Silver Certificates were released. Half the experimental notes included a red “R” to indicate regular paper, while the other half had a red “S” to indicate the special paper.

This note is one of only 12,000 notes issued as replacements for damaged or misprinted notes from the initial release, as indicated by the star next to the serial number. It has an estimate of $2,250 and up.

Another interesting note in the sale is considered the rarest $1 Federal Reserve Star Note, according to Robert Azpiazu in “A Guidebook of Modern Federal Reserve Notes.” This 1988 $1 Federal Reserve Note (Atlanta) replacement note graded PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 96492) is one of just 640,000 printed for the Atlanta Federal Reserve District. This note has an estimate of $750 and up.
