Rare PMG-certified Zanzibar Note Takes Top Spot in Spink Auction

The April sale featured hundreds of PMG-graded notes from around the world.

The prominent Spink auction house wrapped up auctions that featured a large selection of banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) on April 26-28, 2001. The World Banknotes sale offered hundreds of PMG-graded notes from around the world, while another sale focused on rare PMG-certified English banknotes from the Drs. Joanne and Edward Dauer Collection.

The top lot in the World Banknote sale was a Zanzibar/British Administration 1908-16 100 Rupees graded PMG 30 Very Fine NET (lot 301) that realized £90,000 (about $125,500 USD). These notes were from a former British protectorate located on the coast of modern-day Tanzania. Today, the 100 Rupees are scarce.

Other PMG-certified highlights in the World Banknotes sale, auctions 21008 and 21188, included:

  • a Malaya & British Borneo 1953 10,000 Dollars Specimen graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated (lot 236) that realized £32,400 (about $45,200 USD)
  • an India-British, Commercial Bank of India ND (1845-61) 10 Rupees graded PMG 15 Choice Fine (lot 183) that realized £30,000 (about $41,800 USD)
  • a Malaya & British Borneo ND (1962-66) 1 Dollar Printer’s Design graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ (lot 238) that realized £27,600 (about $38,500 USD)
  • an India/British Administration ND (1917-30) 10 Rupees graded PMG 35 Choice Very Fine (lot 196) that realized £25,200 (about $35,100 USD)
  • a Palestine, Currency Board ND (1927-45) 500 Mils graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated (lot 254) that realized £24,000 (about $33,400 USD)

Meanwhile, the Drs. Joanne and Edward Dauer Collection of English Banknotes sale featured a rare Great Britain, Bank of England 1934-43 £1,000 issued in London graded PMG 50 About Uncirculated EPQ (lot 33). This rarity realized £38,400 (about $53,500 USD). White Notes like this one were issued for over 200 years and were replaced in the mid-20th century by notes with an updated, modern appearance.

  • a Great Britain, Bank of England 1829-35 £5 issued in London graded PMG 30 Very Fine (lot 22) that realized £ 7,800 (about $10,800 USD)
  • a Great Britain, Bank of England 1803-07 £1 issued in London graded PMG 20 Very Fine (lot 20) that realized £ 6,000 (about $8,300 USD)

All prices realized include the buyer’s premium.
