A PMG-certified $5,000 Note Realizes an Impressive $180,000 at Auction

Five vintage US notes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) each realized six figures in a Stack’s Bowers auction that took place March 25, 2021.
A desirable 1934 $5,000 Federal Reserve Note (Dallas) graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated EPQ (lot 3456) was a highlight of the sale, realizing $180,000. This high-grade example features James Madison, the fourth US president, and a two-digit serial number.

Another impressive lot was an 1891 $50 Treasury Note graded PMG 40 Extremely Fine EPQ (lot 3276). One of fewer than two dozen known survivors, this note realized $156,000.

- a 1928 $5,000 Federal Reserve Note (Atlanta) graded PMG 30 Very Fine (lot 3454) that realized $102,000
- a 1934 $10,000 Federal Reserve Note (Kansas City) graded PMG 40 Extremely Fine (lot 3459) that realized $99,000
- An 1891 $100 Treasury Note graded PMG 12 Fine (lot 3278) that realized $78,000
- a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 1875 $50 National Bank Note graded PMG 45 Choice Extremely Fine (lot 3527) that realized $78,000
- an 1880 $50 Silver Certificate graded PMG 45 Choice Extremely Fine (lot 3254) that realized $60,000
- a 1905 $20 Gold Certificate graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated EPQ (lot 3329) that realized $36,000
- a 1918 $500 Federal Reserve Note (Chicago) graded PMG 30 Very Fine (lot 3318) that realized $26,400
- a 1905 $20 Gold Certificate graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated (Lot 3333) that realized $26,400
