A 1951 Chinese note that realized six figures is among other recent PMG auction highlights.

A PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ 1861 Demand Note that sold for $372,000 was among the PMG-graded rarities that were sold in auctions in Baltimore and Hong Kong in the past month. Here are some of the highlights from these sales:

Stack's Bowers Baltimore Session 5 - Vanderbilt Collection of US Paper Money (March 22, 2018)

  • Lot 11011 - 1861 $5 Demand Note, graded PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ. Realized: $372,000, beating its pre-auction estimate of $250,000-$350,000.
  • Lot 11027 - 1890 $2 Treasury Note, graded from PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ. Realized: $55,200, in line with its pre-auction estimate of $50,000-$75,000.
  • Lot 10029 - 1890 $5 Treasury Note, graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ. Realized: $24,000, beating its pre-auction estimate of $15,000-$20,000.
  • Lot 11033 - San Francisco, California. 1870 $5 National Gold Bank Note, graded PMG 40 Extremely Fine EPQ. Realized: $66,000, in line with its pre-auction estimate of $50,000-$75,000

  • Lot 20079 - Confederate Currency. 1861 $500, graded PMG 20 Vert Fine NET. Realized: $24,000, in line with its pre-auction estimate of $20,000-$30,000.
  • Lot 20219 - 1891 $20 Treasury Note, graded PMG 67 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ. Realized: $31,200, in line with its pre-auction estimate of $30,000-$40,000.
  • Lot 20390 - Adair, Iowa. $5 1902 Plain Back, graded from PMG 25 Very Fine. Realized: $18,000, beating its pre-auction estimate of $12,500-$17,500.

Spink Numismatic Collector's Series Sale, Hong Kong (April 4-5, 2018)

  • Lot 920 - Hong Kong Mercantile Bank Ltd.: 1959 500 Dollars specimen, graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated. Realized: HK$260,000 (about $33,000 USD), more than double its pre-auction estimate of HK$100,000-$120,000
  • Lot 1573 - China (Ming Dynasty): 1368-99 1 Kuan, graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated EPQ. Realized: HK$180,000 (about $23,000 USD), more than double its pre-auction estimate of HK$60,000-$80,000
  • Lot 2092 - China: 1951 500 Yuan, graded PMG 45 Choice Extremely Fine. Realized: HK$900,000 (about $115,000 USD), more than doubling its pre-auction estimate of HK$300,000-$400,000.
