New 2018 Commemorative Notes Honor Nelson Mandela.

In remembrance of what would have been Nelson Mandela’s centenary birthday, the South Africa Reserve Bank has announced it will release a new series of notes and a 5 Rand coin. These new notes will consist of 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 Rand notes.

The bank announcement came on Sunday, February 11th, the 28-year anniversary mark since Mandela was released from Victor Verster prison. The Nelson Mandela Foundation also stated, “As on the day he was taken into custody, Nelson Mandela’s release on 11 February 1990 was also on a Sunday and again on a country road. When he walked into freedom at 4:22 pm there was nothing lonely or quiet about that moment. Hundreds of cheering people witnessed the occasion and scores more lined his route into Cape Town. South Africa would never be the same again.”1

The new coin and currency is scheduled to be released on July 18th, the birth month and day for Mandela. SARB governor Lesetja Kganyago said, “Nelson Mandela represented the best version of ourselves as South Africans”. He continued, “We unveiled the current Mandela series of banknotes in 2012 to honour him. While preserving the value of money is our main mandate‚ our purpose is to be a bastion of institutional strength‚ contributing to a stable and prosperous economy that serves the well-being of all South Africans‚ and guided in part by Madiba’s values.”2

Images and details of these colorful new notes have yet to be released. The existing, popular Mandela notes that were issued in 2012 and are currently in circulation will remain legal tender and more issues will continue.

These new South Africa notes will be eligible in several PMG Registry sets here: PMG Registry: All Sets: South Africa
