PMG-graded Eldorado Collection Notes Strike Gold at Auction

Posted on 1/12/2018

The Stack's Bowers sale of rare Colombian notes produces some outstanding prices realized.

The Eldorado Collection of Colombian Paper Money, which includes hundreds of notes certified by PMG, far exceeded expectations at a Stack's Bowers Galleries auction in New York City on January 11. The amazing collection of 19th and 20th century notes includes many that were the first or finest that PMG certified.

Many of the notes exceeded their pre-auction estimate, with some exceeding it by several multiples. The top lot was 10045, a set of four 1923 Banco de la Republica notes: 1 Peso, 2 Pesos, 5 Pesos and 10 Pesos, all graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated or PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated EPQ. The notes, all featuring a low serial number (0000003), sold for $84,000, more than 16 times the preauction estimate of $2,500 to $5,000.
