What do the Fiji Rugby team, the 2016 Rio Olympics, and the new Fiji $7 note have in common? Fiji Rugby 7’s team won the first gold Olympic medal in history for Fiji. In honor of this momentous occasion, the Reserve Bank of Fiji announced that they would release a new circulating 50c coin and a new denomination in a $7 note, in honor of the Rugby 7’s accomplishment.
Governor Barry Whiteside suggested that although these are issued as legal tender, he suspects they will quickly become collector items and very few will actually circulate. He also commented, “We are pleased that we are able to deliver to all Fijians a high quality banknote and coin that would mean a lot to many Fijians and an inspiration to aspiring sportsmen and women as well as our children." As of as of April 21st, 2017, in conjunction with a note printer in France and with the Royal Canadian Mint, two million notes were printed.
The front of this colorful note depicts the Fijian flag and a relaxed Olympic coach, Ben Ryan, in the background. The Coat of Arms, a gold medal, and the RBF logo are also seen in the background. A smiling and determined Olympic captain, Osea Kolinisau, is boldly featured in the foreground.
The entire Olympic 7’s team, Prime Minister, Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama, and team officials stand together proudly on the back of the note. The back also has many security features, including a STARsheen windowed security thread with demetalized FIJI 7’s GOLD OLYMPIANS and a watermark with Savenaca Rawaca.
These colorful notes will be available in the PMG Registry here:
