PMG & NGC Highlights in the Spink Spring 2017 Auction

The Spink Spring Auction will be held April 5th and 6th, 2017, at the Spink offices, located on the 4th Floor of the Hua Fu Commercial Building, 111 Queen's Road West, Hong Kong, China. The sale features a number of PMG-certified banknotes and NGC-certified coins from Hong Kong, China and Macau, China. Below are some of the highlights:

  • Lot 73 (shown below) - Malaya, Board of Commissioners of Currency - $100. 1.1.1942, serial number A/5 74258, green and red on white, George VI at right, lion watermark at bottom center, arms of member states on reverse.
 (Pick 15), PMG 35 Choice Very Fine and well above average condition for this type. 1942年馬來亞壹佰圓,PMG 35,少見 Estimate HK$20,000 to HK$24,000

  • Lot 115 (shown below) - Malaysia -100 ringgit, ND(2001). A very scarce, replacement serial number 1 note ZD 0000001. Purple on multicolor underprint, with Abdul Rahman at right, and a reverse multicolored, automobile production theme at left.

  • Lot 117 (shown below) Malaysia - 5 ringgit, ND (2012). A rare solid serial number AA 10000000, polymer note. Black on green and red, Abdul Rahman at right and a reverse green, a pair of Rhinocerus hornbills at center.

  • Lot 403 (shown below) - The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation - $50, 1.1.1934, serial number B448592. Green on multicolored underprint, with communication at left, arms at top center, value at center and corners, and a strong hand-signed signature at bottom left, a reverse green, with a bank building at center, angel above, serial number at four corners.
 (Pick 175d), PMG 64EPQ. A superb original note with strong paper, clear signatures and fantastic visual appeal, the first note in the only consecutive pair known at present and bearing the highest grade in the PMG population report. 1934年香港上海匯豐銀行伍拾圓,PMG64EPQ 最高評級,罕見品相!   • Lot 404 (shown below) - The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation - $50, 1.1.1934, serial number B448593. Green on multicolored underprint, with communication at left, arms top center, value at center and each corner, strong hand-signed signature at bottom left, reverse green, bank building at center, angel above and serial number at four corners. 
(Pick 175d) PMG 64EPQ. A superb original note with strong paper, clear signatures and fantastic visual appeal, the second note of the only consecutive pair known at present and bearing the highest grade in the PMG population report 1934年香港上海匯豐銀行伍拾圓,PMG 64EPQ 最高評級,罕見品相!   • Lot 477 The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China - $5, 1.9.1927. Black, serial M/A 740706, blue and black, pagoda at left, river scene at right, coats of arms at center, a ’FIVE' in red English and Chinese text, strong hand-signed signature at bottom left, reverse red and black, bank building at center and brush annotations on reverse.

  • Lot 674 The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation - $1000, 1.1.1993. A replacement AND lucky number ZZ000001, yellow-orange and multicolored, the profile of a lion at left, a view of Victoria Harbor at center, with a lion watermark.
(Pick 205a*) PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated and an extremely important successor to the 1985 $1000, with the same serial number that was sold by Spink China on 14th January 2017. A once in a lifetime opportunity to own this fabulous number. 1993年香港上海匯豐銀行壹仟圓,000001號首枚ZZ版補票,PMG 64,罕見!

  • Lot 681 Mercantile Bank of India - $10 color trial, 1.1.1930. Dark green on black with a light green underprint. Sampan, houses and a bridge near a lakeside at the center, reverse violet and black, Mercury with winged helmet at the center, overprinted 'SPECIMEN Waterlow and Sons Ltd.' in red on both sides,

  • Lot 682 Mercantile Bank of India - $25. Color trial, issue of 1912, brown frame on black and pale green, '25' at each corner, dockside scene at left, a manuscript signature at bottom right, reverse green and black with Mercury at the center, and a printed 'Specimen Waterlow and Sons' in red, control number '2332' on top border.   • Lot: 683 Mercantile Bank of India - $50. Color trial, 1.7.1935. Dark blue frame on multicolor underprint, with a classical male bust at the left, a ’50' at each corner, a watermarked area at the right, and a reverse, predominantly blue, Chinese mansion at center. ‘SPECIMEN WATERLOW & SONS LTD.' printed on both sides.

  • Lot:787 China, Kiangnan Province - Silver Dollar, 1901. Coiled dragon and rosettes on onvoerse and a Chinese legend on the reverse.

  • Lot:1130 Bank of Communications - $10, 1912, serial number 826056, Tientsin.   • Lot:1254 Hupeh Government Cash Bank - 10 taels, remainder, 1904, vertical format, black on yellow-orange, Zhang Zhidong and Duan Fang at top, ornate black dragons chasing a fireball at center, reverse green, black Chinese text, two large hole cancellations.

  • Lot:1375 International Banking Corporation - Set of 3 'Gui Yuan' specimens for 5, 10 and 100 taels, Shanghai, 1918, serial number 00000. The 4th note of the 'Four Rarities,’ and the one missing from most collections, especially graded by PMG (only 7 notes graded according to their population report).   • Lot:1480 People's Bank of China - 2nd series renminbi, 1953-1956, 10 yuan, serial number I II III 0000000. Black on pink, with a peasant couple at the center, a watermark of the National Emblem at left, a reverse black, bank title and denomination in 4 different scripts, (Pick 870s) PMG 53 NET Slight repair at lower right,of the the iconic notes issued by the People's Bank.   • Lot: 1500 People's Bank of China - 2nd series renminbi, 1953-1956, 10 yuan, 1953, serial number 2325320. Nicknamed the 'Big Black Ten', large sized note, black and multicolor, with a peasant couple at center.
