These two notes, B546 & B547, were released in December 2015. The 5 Dinar portrays Libya’s famous historical site of Cyrene, Libya, where there are sanctuaries for Apollo, Demeter, and Zeus.
The 10 Dinar note features Omar El Mukhtar, the famous and popular freedom fighter. Mukhtar led Libyan resistance for over 20 years in the fight to resist Italian colonization. He was hanged in 1931.
Earlier media images of these two notes differ in some aspects from the above notes that were issued. In the original images, there are differing features. Interestingly enough, there was a theft in 2013 that involved these notes. In 2013, there was a Libyan Central Bank van robbery that resulted in the loss of $54 million dollars in Dinar notes, along with an additional $12 million US dollars. It has been suggested that the bank changed the design of the notes after the massive theft.
These notes follow on the heels of the 10 dinar note B542b, which was released earlier in 2015. This note, below, features Omar El Mukhtar, as well.
