From the Grading Room

Recently graded highlights include a scarce error note and a Massachusetts Continental Army Depreciation Certificate.

Fr# 233 1899 $1 Silver Certificate, PMG Gem UNC 66EPQ Mismatched Serial Numbers

This great error note was spotted in one of our verification checks. The customer, who did not have the error notated on the invoice, was definitely happy to learn that they had a much scarcer note than they had realized. It is not often that you see errors on Large Size type notes, especially a mismatched serial number error. There are only around a dozen Large Size type mismatched serial number error notes known to exist. To be able to grade a Large Size type error of this kind and in such excellent grade is something this grader will not soon forget.

Massachusetts Bay Continental Army Depreciation Certificate, PMG VF 30Net

This 6 percent interest-bearing note was meant to account for the depreciation of pay soldiers received while serving in the Continental Line. The note offered the soldiers inflation protection, as the value of the note would be set against the value of corn, beef, sheep wool and sole leather if the value of continental currency dropped. The note received a “Net” grade due to the adhesive on the back of the note.
