PMG Registry Featured Set: Lesotho

Posted on 10/20/2026

Sixty years after gaining its independence, the African country is building a distinct numismatic tradition.

The nation of Lesotho gained its independence from the United Kingdom 60 years ago this month. Surrounded completely by South Africa, the nation of 2 million people has an economy that revolves around agriculture. There are 15 registered Lesotho sets in the PMG Registry, most of them in the Lesotho, Type Set, 1979-Date, Issued Notes category, which is led by North of Sunset's North of Sunset-Lesotho set.

The set is 80% complete, with 24 of its 30 slots filled. Among the highlights is a 1979 10 Maloti, one of three denominations from the initial release of banknotes in 1980. The note shows King Moshoeshoe II, who reigned from 1966 to 1990, and again for just under a year starting in late January 1995. The back shows a Basotho horseman amid the mountainous terrain.

The king is also shown on the 2015 200 Maloti along with Letsie III (his son, successor, and the current king) and Moshoeshoe I (his ancestor, the first king of Lesotho). Maloti is the plural of the name of the currency, loti, which is derived from the indigenous word for mountain. The loti is pegged to the South African rand, which is also accepted as currency in Lesotho.

You can explore the range of Lesotho's currency featured in this PMG Registry set through its slideshow, which includes images of each of its notes. Thank you, North of Sunset, for sharing this beautiful set with the PMG Registry community.
