Crown Currency Offers PMG-certified Dutch Banknotes from the Collection of Artist Oxenaar

Four notes from the collection of Dutch graphic artist and banknote designer Ootje Oxenaar are among more than 1,100 world rarities certified by PMG® that are being offered in a Crown Currency Auctions sale. Online bidding is already underway for Crown Currency Live Auction 59, which will be held October 9, 2026.

Among the top lots in the sale are four iconic banknotes designed by Oxenaar between 1964 and 1987: Michiel de Ruyter (100 Gulden), the Snip (100 Gulden), Sunflower (50 Gulden), and Lighthouse (250 Gulden). Pedigreed to the artist's personal collection — the Oxenaar Archives — they include a Netherlands, Nederlandsche Bank 1970 100 Gulden graded PMG 67 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 1059); a Netherlands, Nederlandsche Bank 1977 (ND 1981) 100 Gulden graded PMG 67 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 1061); a Netherlands, Nederlandsche Bank 1982 50 Gulden graded PMG 67 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 1060); and a Netherlands, Nederlandsche Bank 1985 (ND 1986) 250 Gulden graded PMG 67 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 1062).

Oxenaar’s legendary designs created for The Nederlandsche Bank transformed currency into vibrant works of art. They were an instant hit among collectors upon release, celebrated globally for their attractive designs and anti-counterfeiting features. The banknotes were circulated until the Euro’s introduction in 2002. Now, bidders have a rare opportunity to add one of these historic banknotes directly from Oxenaar’s personal collection.
