Spink Offers India and Other World Banknotes Certified by PMG
Posted on 9/22/2026
More than 100 world banknotes certified by PMG® are featured in an ongoing Spink auction, including two rarities that tell a story about a critical period of transition for India’s currency. Online bidding is already underway for the World and British Banknotes Featuring the Jersey Collection Part II, which concludes on September 30, 2026.
Among the featured notes in this auction is an India 1858 10 Rupees Progressive Proof graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated (lot 133), with an estimate of £40,000 to £50,000 (about $55,000 to $68,000). Also available is an India, British Bank of Bombay 1855-66 25 Rupees graded PMG 10 Very Good (lot 130), with an estimate of £18,000 to £28,000 (about $24,000 to $38,000).
Both historic notes belong to the same fascinating era, when paper currency in India was becoming more established under British rule. The Bank of Bombay note was designed for one of the three Presidency Banks operating under the British East India Company, while the 10 Rupee note bears the date of 1858 — the pivotal year when the administration of India passed from the East India Company to the British Crown following the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
