PMG-certified English Rarities from Mulberry Collection Offered by Spink

Dozens of English banknotes certified by PMG®, many from the reign of Queen Victoria, are available to collectors in an auction of The Mulberry Collection of English Banknotes, which is being presented by Spink on October 1, 2026.

AGreat Britain, Bank of England 1925-29 £1,000 - London graded PMG 35 Choice Very Fine (lot 73) has the highest estimate, at £30,000 to £40,000 (about $41,000 to $54,000). Featuring the distinctive portrait of King George V and issued during the interwar period, this high-denomination note was rarely encountered by the public and was withdrawn from circulation as the Bank of England moved toward tighter control of high-value currency transactions. It is the only example of its catalog number in the PMG Population and one of only five examples of this denomination there.

Also available is a Great Britain, Bank of England 1866-70 £5 - London graded PMG 25 Very Fine (lot 50), with an estimate of £24,000 to £34,000 (about $32,000 to $46,000). Dating from the reign of Queen Victoria, this note provides a glimpse into Britain's expanding financial system during the Industrial Revolution, when London was emerging as a dominant global center of banking and trade. The note features elaborate engraved designs intended to make counterfeiting difficult. It is one of only two examples of this catalog number in the PMG Population Report.
