Uncut Pair of Fractional Currency Among Top PMG-certified Rarities in Heritage Sale

An uncut pair of 50 Cent notes that were printed amid a coin shortage caused by the Civil War is among a hundreds of rarities certified by PMG® being offered in an elite currency auction this fall. Online bidding will begin in September for Heritage Auctions' US Currency Signature Auction #3602, which will be held October 7-9, 2026.

A top highlight in the auction is a 50 Cents Third Issue Fractional Currency Uncut Pair graded PMG 58 Choice About Uncirculated EPQ and pedigreed to the John J. Ford Collection. Third Issue Fractional Currency was released late in the Civil War (and continued to be issued for several years after it ended) to help ease the economic challenges caused by coin hoarding. This particular catalog number is among the rarest, with only seven examples known to the modern collecting community (two pairs and five singles), according to Heritage Auctions. This is the sole-highest-graded example in the PMG Population Report.
