PMG Registry Featured Set: Seychelles

Let's look at currency from the Indian Ocean nation that declared its independence from the United Kingdom 50 years ago.

As the United States celebrates 250 years since its Declaration of Independence, the nation of Seychelles is marking a half century of independence, also from the United Kingdom. Let's take a look at the banknotes from Africa's smallest country with an interesting PMG Registry set: Kriks from Estonia's Seychelles P19-Now. It leads the Republic of Seychelles, 1976-Date, Issued Notes, Complete, Including Varieties category.

Located in the Indian Ocean several hundred miles east of Africa, the Seychelles was inhabited by the French in the 1700s before being formally transferred to British rule by treaty in 1814. This Seychelles, Central Bank ND (2001) 100 Rupees graded PMG 68 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ in this set is a "Top Pop," unsurpassed in the PMG Population Report. The front of the note shows Nepenthes pervillei, the only pitcher plant found in Seychelles, while the back shows the Seychelles giant tortoise.

The country's notes are focused on its wildlife, including this Seychelles, Central Bank 2011 500 Rupees graded PMG 67 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ. The front (at top right) depicts a sailfish, which is renowned for its speed, while the back shows a Seychelles scops owl. Only a few hundred individuals represent the remaining population of this owl, which, like the Seychelles giant tortoise, was once thought to be extinct.
