PMG Registry Featured Set: Tunisia

Posted on 3/24/2026

Tunisia has now been free for seven decades, so we're taking a look at a complete set that tracks the evolution of the Dinar in that time.

This month, Tunisia marks 70 years since it gained independence from France, which held it as a colony for 75 years. So this month, we’re taking a look at the most popular Tunisia category in the PMG Registry, Banque Centrale De Tunise, 1958-Date, Issued Notes, which tracks Tunisian currency from the introduction of the Dinar right after independence to the present day. Dr. Asem Albasheer’s Tunisia - 1958-Date set leads a field of 14 Registry competitors.

This impressive collection is 100% complete and is powered by notes such as a Tunisia, Banque Centrale ND (ca. 1958) 5 Dinars graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ, tied for highest-graded in the PMG Population Report. The front of the note depicts Habib Bourguiba, who served as Tunisia’s prime minister from 1956 to 1957, and then as its first president until 1987.

Another top note is the Tunisia, Banque Centrale 50 Dinars Commemorative, the highest denomination in the set. It shows Ibn Rachik, a poet who served the rulers of the Zirid dynasty that ruled much of North Africa 1,000 years ago. He is juxtaposed with the City of Culture, a modern complex in the heart of the capital, Tunis.

This PMG Registry set includes images of more than half of its notes, which can be viewed in a slideshow format here. All but five of the 39 total notes are graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated or higher.
