Rare Notes from Greece and Suriname Among PMG-certified Highlights in Crown Currency Sale

An auction on March 31 includes nearly 200 ‘Top Pop’ examples of PMG-certified banknotes from around the world.

Grab your passport and take a trip around the world, as you tour more than 1,400 exquisite world banknotes certified by PMG®, including nearly 200 that are “Top Pop” examples, in an upcoming auction. Online bidding is already underway for Crown Currency Live Auction 52 on March 31, 2026.

Among the top highlights is a Greece, Bank of Greece 1947 5,000 Drachmai graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 677). Issued in the shadow of postwar instability that led to the Greek Civil War, the 1947 Bank of Greece 5,000 Drachmai note, like many high-denomination issues of the era, saw its purchasing power was eroded quickly. This note is one of only two sharing the honor of having the top grade in the PMG Population Report, which includes more than 100 examples.

Also available is a Suriname, Centrale Bank 2000 25,000 Gulden graded PMG 68 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 1496). This note originated from a period marked by inflation and the need for higher denominations just before Suriname transitioned to the Surinamese Dollar. The note quickly became obsolete after the currency reform.
