PMG Registry Featured Set: People's Republic of China
Posted on 2/24/2026
Chinese banknotes draw some of the fiercest competition in the PMG Registry. More than 50 sets compete in the People's Bank of China, People's Republic, Type Set, 1953-Date, Issued Notes category, which is led by Mikey Eyes' The Michael T. Ungaro People's Bank of China, People's Republic, 1953-Date, P860-Date, Type Set Collection #1. This set includes 55 of the 56 notes needed, earning it an impressive 98% completion rate.
Among the top highlights are several notes graded PMG 70★ Gem Uncirculated EPQ, the pinnacle of the PMG Grading Scale. Two timely commemoratives stand out: a China 2024 20 Yuan -Year of the Dragon and a China 2022 20 Yuan - Beijing 2022 Olympic Games. The 2026 Olympic Games and Chinese New Year celebrations converged this year in mid-February.
But this challenging set includes much more, including the notes issued for circulation dated 1953 and later. Among them are a China 1972 5 Jiao and a China 1999 1 Yuan, each graded PMG 70★ Gem Uncirculated EPQ. A Solid-9 Serial Number adds to the collector interest of the latter note.
This particular set was honored with a 2023 PMG Registry Award. In addition, the set owner has gone the extra mile by including images of the notes; check out the slideshow here.
If the range of this set seems a bit daunting, the PMG Registry has many that are much more focused. These include People's Bank of China, Commemorative Issues, 1999-Date, P902-Date, which is limited to nine commemoratives issued by China since 1999. Mikey Eyes has a set that leads that category, as well.
