The January auction includes a Specimen of a note intended for Japan and a seldom-seen modern gold restrike.

Hundreds of banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) and dozens of coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) are part of a Spink auction focused on China. Bidding is already underway for the auction, which includes CSS120A - China Banknotes and Coins and CSS120B - Hong Kong, Macau, World Banknotes and Coins, concluding on January 10 and 11, 2026, respectively.

The top lot in the auction is a Japan ND (ca. 1870s) 50 Dollars Color Trial Specimen - Hiogo graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated (CSS120B, lot 1407), which has an estimate of HKD450,000 to HKD600,000 (about $58,000 to $77,000). It was printed for the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation at a time when it had just expanded into Japan during an era of new openness there to international commerce. Hiogo, the city printed on this note, was later absorbed into Kobe.
