PMG Registry Featured Set: Bulgarian Lev
Posted on 12/23/2025
This month's NGC Registry column put a spotlight on a set of coins from Bulgaria to salute the Lev, which is about to be replaced by the euro. The PMG Registry is doing the same by featuring KOSTADIN VEZYOV's Bulgaria Complete/1904-Date, P1-Date VEZYOV. This collector has gathered 110 Bulgarian notes together covering 90% of what's required in the Bulgaria, 1904-Date, Type Set, Issued Notes category.
The set is a tribute to a century of Bulgarian paper money, made enjoyable by the fact that the collector included images of nearly every one of their notes. (Check out the slideshow here.) Among the early notes is a Bulgaria, National Bank ND (1920) 2 Leva Srebro, the last silver banknote issued by that country.
The final banknote listed in the set is a Bulgaria, National Bank 2005 20 Leva Commemorative, which celebrates the 120th anniversary of the first Bulgarian banknote, an 1885 20 Leva Zlato (extremely difficult to find these days and outside the range of this PMG Registry set). An image of this note is shown on the back of the commemorative, along with a sculpture of a seated woman that is used on the 1920 2 Leva Srebro shown earlier in this column.
Other highlights in this PMG Registry set include a Bulgaria, State Treasury Bond 1922 500 Leva Zlatni graded PMG 30 Very Fine and a Bulgaria, National Bank 1916 1,000 Leva Zlatni graded PMG 30 Very Fine. Thank you, KOSTADIN VEZYOV, for sharing your images of this set and your enthusiasm for Bulgarian numismatics with the PMG Registry community!
