Heritage Offers Newly Reported High-Denomination Note and Florida Rarities Certified by PMG
Posted on 12/23/2025
Historic notes issued by Florida banks along with two high-denomination rarities are among more than 1,300 lots certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) that are being offered in an upcoming Heritage Auctions sale. Online bidding is already underway for the FUN US Currency Signature Auction, which is being held January 13-16, 2026.
The top lot in the auction is a 1934 $10,000 Federal Reserve Note (Boston) graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated (lot 22268), which has an estimate of at least $300,000. This newly reported example of the catalog number associated with Boston brings the total surviving examples to 18, according to the auction house. Meanwhile, a 1934 $10,000 Federal Reserve Note (Atlanta) graded PMG 30 Very Fine (lot 22269) that has an estimate of at least $150,000 is one of only two known survivors of these Atlanta notes.
A Pensacola, Florida 1875 $5 National Bank Note graded PMG 45 Choice Extremely Fine (lot 20372) is also making waves ahead of the sale, with an estimate of at least $150,000. Out of the 12,000 banks that issued currency under the National Bank Act in the late 19th century, Florida Charter notes are exceedingly rare, as only around 5,000 notes have been reported within current currency circles. This Pensacola note is only the fourth First Charter note from Florida known, and it is in remarkable condition.
Additionally, a Tallahassee, Florida 1882 $100 Brown Back National Bank Note graded PMG 25 Very Fine (lot 20381) also has an estimate of at least $150,000. Brown Back notes were issued by individual National Banks under the National Bank Act throughout the late 19th century. While all Brown Back notes are collectible, $100 notes — the series’ highest denomination — are particularly valuable to collectors. Although seven Florida banks issued $100 Brown Backs to the tune of 6,400 notes, only three are reported, with all three from the Tallahassee bank, according to the auction house.
Other PMG-certified notes in the auction include:
- an 1875 $50 Legal Tender Note graded PMG 15 Choice Fine (lot 22035), with an estimate of at least $80,000
- a group of four 1914 $100 Red Seal Federal Reserve Notes (Boston) with consecutive serial numbers, each graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated (lot 22157), with an estimate of at least $80,000
