PMG-certified Qatari Banknotes Exceed Expectations to Lead Noonans Sale

Nine Qatari banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) stunned collectors when they led a recent Noonans World Banknotes auction, with a combined price realized of £285,200 (about $378,000).
Leading the sale were a Qatar Monetary Agency ND (ca. 1980) 500 Riyals Front Proof graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated and a Back Proof graded PMG 50 About Uncirculated EPQ (lot 900). This two-Proof lot realized £74,400 (about $99,000), far exceeding its pre-auction estimate of £3,800.
Other Qatar Monetary Agency Proofs offered in the sale also impressed. A lot including an ND (ca. 1980) 100 Riyals Front Proof graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated and Back Proof graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated (lot 899) realized £59,250 (about $69,000), while a lot that included an ND (ca. 1980) 50 Riyals Front Proof graded PMG 58 Choice About Uncirculated and Back Proof graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated (lot 898) realized £52,080 (about $69,000). Just as with the 500 Riyals, these notes easily surpassed their pre-auction estimates of £3,600 and £3,200.

- a Qatar Monetary Agency ND (ca. 1980) 5 Riyals Front Proof graded PMG 50 About Uncirculated EPQ (lot 896) that realized £34,720 (about $46,000)
- a Qatar Monetary Agency ND (ca. 1980) 1 Riyals Front Proof graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated EPQ (lot 895) that realized £24,800 (about $33,000)

- a Rhodesia & Nyasaland / British Administration 1956-60 10/- Shillings graded PMG 58 Choice About Uncirculated EPQ (lot 915), which realized £9,920 (about $13,000)
- a Straits Settlements / British Administration 1925-29 10 Dollars graded PMG 25 Very Fine (lot 1026), which realized £7,440 (about $10,000)
