Trigometric Offers Rare PMG-certified Notes and NGC-certified Coins
Posted on 12/9/2025
An exciting mix of banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) and coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) powers the upcoming Trigometric Auction on December 20, 2025, including a pair of historic paper rarities with an elite pedigree and a seldom-seen Malaysian mint error.
Among the featured PMG-certified notes is a two-piece lot that includes a Straits Settlements ND (ca. 1860s) 50 Dollars Front Proof graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated and a Malaya 1942; ND (1945) 50 Dollars Color Trial Specimen graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated EPQ, each pedigreed to the Frank Goon Collection (lot 1357). This lot has an estimate of RM100,000 to RM150,000 (about $24,000 to $36,000).
Goon, the author of "The Banknotes of British Malaya," built what is believed to be the most comprehensive collection of banknotes ever assembled from the region. To highlight their prestigious provenance, the notes from the Frank Goon Collection were encapsulated with a special PMG label that includes a notation about the collection as well as an image of an orchid, an important symbol in Singapore that reflects its blending of cultures.
Other PMG-certified banknotes in this sale include:
- a British North Borneo / British Administration 1905-29 25 Dollars graded PMG 30 Very Fine (lot 1346), with an estimate of RM58,000 to RM80,000 (about $14,000 to $19,000)
- a Straits Settlements / British Administration 1925-29 5 Dollars graded PMG 50 About Uncirculated (lot 1350), with an estimate of RM50,000 to RM80,000 (about $12,000 to $19,000)
- a two-piece lot that includes a Malaysia 2017 Bank Negara 600 Ringgit Commemorative graded PMG 68 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ and a 60 Ringgit Commemorative graded PMG 67 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 1144), with an estimate of RM20,000 to RM30,000 (about $4,800 to $7,100)
- another two-piece lot that includes a Malaysia 2017 Bank Negara 600 Ringgit Commemorative graded PMG 68 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ and a 60 Ringgit Commemorative graded PMG 67 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 1143), with an estimate of RM19,000 to RM28,000 (about $4,500 to $6,700)
- a British North Borneo / British Administration 1884-1920 1 Dollar graded PMG 25 Very Fine (lot 1343), with an estimate of RM8,000 to RM24,000 (about $1,900 to $5,700)
Leading among the NGC-certified lots is a Malaysia 1969 50 Sen - No Security Edge with a Ragged Edge Clip graded NGC Mint Error AU 55 (lot 1059), with an estimate of RM12,000 to RM24,000 (about $2,800 to $5,700). Whereas virtually all 50 Sen coins of 1967-69 were struck with a central groove or “split” edge, a tiny number mistakenly came out with a standard reeded (or milled) edge. Because this edge error slipped past the mint and entered circulation, genuine milled-edge 1969 50 Sen coins are extremely scarce, and accordingly much sought after by collectors. In addition, this example has a ragged edge clip, which can be seen at 7 o’clock on the obverse.
Other NGC-certified coins in this sale include:
- a Tibet (1939-42) Rupee - Large Bust with Collar graded NGC MS 62 (lot 1032), with an estimate of RM6,000 to RM8,000 (about $1,400 to $1,900)
- a Straits Settlements 1900H 50 Cents graded NGC AU 50 (lot 1037), with an estimate of RM2,400 to RM3,000 (about $600 to $700)
- a set of six Malaysia 1992 silver coins, including a 1 Sen, 5 Sen, 10 Sen, 20 Sen and 50 Sen, each graded NGC PF 67 Ultra Cameo, and an 1 Ringgit graded NGC PF 68 Ultra Cameo (lot 1062), with an estimate of RM1,700 to RM3,000 (about $400 to $700)
- a Malaysia 1976 Bronze Sen graded NGC MS 65 BN (lot 1051), with an estimate of RM1,500 to RM2,500 (about $350 to $600)
- a British North Borneo 1884H 1 Cent graded NGC SP 65 BN (lot 1033), with an estimate of RM1,900 to RM2,400 (about $450 to $600)
