Stack's Bowers Galleries Offers ‘Technicolor’ Gold Certificate Certified by PMG
Posted on 10/20/2025
A high-grade example of an iconic US Gold Certificate from the early 1900s that has been certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) is commanding attention in an ongoing Stack's Bowers Galleries auction. The rarity is one of almost 100 PMG-certified notes being offered in Stack’s Bowers’ November 2025 Showcase Auction - Session 7 - U.S. Currency Part 2 - Small Size, Error Notes, Large Size, which is set to end on November 13, 2025.
The top PMG-certified highlight of the auction is a 1905 $20 Gold Certificate graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 7139), which has an estimate of $70,000 to $90,000. This particular Friedberg number contains a burnt-orange overprint against a gold background, earning it the Technicolor nickname to describe one of the most distinctive compositions of US paper money ever printed. The iconic colorful design featuring the bust of President George Washington was short-lived, as it was replaced the next year, but it quickly became a collector favorite. According to the auction house, only 600 pieces have survived between both Friedberg Numbers of this design, and this particular example is unsurpassed in grade in the PMG Population Report.
Other PMG-certified highlights in the auction include:
