Rare PMG-certified Gold Certificates Realize Six Figures in Stack's Bowers Auction
Posted on 9/22/2025
Two rare Gold Certificates that are certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) each realized six figures at a recent Stack's Bowers Galleries auction. The rarities were among the highlights of a pair of auction sessions, including Stack's Bowers' Summer 2025 Global Showcase Auction - Session 7: US Currency, which was held on August 28, 2025, and Summer 2025 Global Showcase Auction - Session D: World Paper Money, which was held the next day.
The top result for a PMG-graded note in these auction sessions was a 1922 $1,000 Gold Certificate graded PMG 58 Choice About Uncirculated EPQ (Session 7, lot 23183), which realized $192,000. Compared to other surviving examples of this series, this is an exemplary mid-grade specimen that received the Exceptional Paper Quality designation. Only 29 examples of this particular catalog number are found in the PMG Population Report, with this note earning the sole-highest grade.
Another PMG-graded highlight of the auction was an 1882 $20 Gold Certificate graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated EPQ and pedigreed to the Dauer Collection (Session 7, lot 23150), which realized $132,000. Most of the notes known for this Friedberg number have received grades below Extremely Fine and many include minor repairs or restoration. Instead, this well-preserved $20 note with a Bruce-Wyman signature combination managed to also earn the rare EPQ designation. There are only 15 examples of this catalog number in the PMG Population Report, and only one is in finer condition.
