PMG-certified Straits Settlements Rarities Highlight Monetarium Auction

The August sale also includes hundreds of other paper money collectibles from elsewhere in Asia.

A remarkable selection of more than 400 banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) from Southeast Asia and beyond is being offered by Monetarium. Online bidding is underway for Auction 39, which concludes on August 18, 2025.

Top PMG-certified rarities include two Straits Settlements / British Administration notes: a 1925-27 100 Dollars graded PMG 30 Very Fine (lot 1226) and a 1925 50 Dollars graded PMG 40 Extremely Fine (lot 1227). With an estimate of SGD60,000 to SGD80,000 (about $47,000 to $62,000), the 100 Dollars has a median grade among the 35 examples of its catalog number in the PMG Population Report. Meanwhile, the 50 Dollars is an above-average example among the 51 in the PMG Population Report and has an estimate of SGD50,000 to SGD60,000 (about $39,000 to $47,000).

  • a Straits Settlements 1916-20 100 Dollars pedigreed to the Peh Family Collection and graded PMG 20 Very Fine (lot 1225), with an estimate of SGD46,000 to SGD50,000 (about $36,000 to $39,000)
  • a Malaysia, Bank Negara ND (1976-81) 1,000 Ringgit graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 1340), with an estimate of SGD30,000 to SGD50,000 (about $23,000 to $39,000)
  • a Singapore, Board of Commissioners of Currency ND (1980) 10,000 Dollars graded PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 1487), with an estimate of SGD40,000 to SGD50,000 (about $31,000 to $39,000)
  • a Singapore, Board of Commissioners of Currency ND (1973) 10,000 Dollars graded PMG 50 About Uncirculated (lot 1429), with an estimate of SGD36,000 to SGD40,000 (about $28,000 to $31,000)
  • a Malaysia, Bank Negara ND (1989) 500 Ringgit Replacement / Star graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 1367), with an estimate of SGD30,000 to SGD36,000 (about $23,000 to $28,000)
  • a China / Empire - Yuan Dynasty 1264-1341 2 Kuan graded PMG 12 Fine NET (lot 1164), with an estimate of SGD26,000 to SGD30,000 (about $20,000 to $23,000)
  • a Straits Settlements / British Administration 1925-29 10 Dollars graded PMG 45 Choice Extremely Fine (lot 1244), with an estimate of SGD26,000 to SGD30,000 (about $20,000 to $23,000)
  • a China / People's Republic 1953 10 Yuan graded PMG 30 Very Fine (lot 1174), with an estimate of SGD16,000 to SGD18,000 (about $13,000 to $14,000)
  • a Malaya / British Administration 1941 (ND 1945) 5 Dollars graded PMG 67 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 1276), with an estimate of SGD12,000 to SGD15,000 (about $9,400 to $12,000)
  • a Sarawak, Government of Sarawak 1940 10 Dollars graded PMG 30 Very Fine (lot 1208), with an estimate of SGD3,000 to SGD3,600 (about $2,300 to $2,800)

The auction also features dozens of coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®), the coin-grading affiliate of PMG. They include a China YR34(1908) Chihli Silver Dollar graded NGC MS 64 (lot 1084) with an estimate of SGD15,000 to SGD18,000 (about $12,000 to $14,000) and a Singapore 1969 Gold 150 Dollars - Founding of Singapore graded NGC MS 68 (lot 1413) with an estimate of SGD3,000 to SGD4,000 (about $2,300 to $3,100).
