Spink Offers Wide Range of Asian Rarities Certified by NGC and PMG
Posted on 7/11/2025
More than 600 banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) and more than 150 coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) are being offered in a pair of Spink auctions focused on Asian rarities. Bidding is already underway for CSS117A - China, Hong Kong and World Coins Summer Auction, which concludes on July 17, 2025, and CSS117B - China, Hong Kong and World Banknotes Summer Auction, which concludes on July 18, 2025.
The top PMG-graded highlight in the auctions is a Hong Kong, HK & Shanghai Banking Corporation 1916-23 5 Dollars graded PMG 30 Very Fine (lot 1415), with an estimate of HKD90,000 to HKD110,000 (about $11,500 to $14,000). This intricately adorned banknote features the royal coat of arms at center, reflecting Hong Kong’s position at the time as a British colony. To the left, there is a street scene showing water carriers, and to the right, a junk ship sailing at sea. Out of 116 examples of this PMG-certified rarity, only 25 have higher grades in the PMG Population Report.
The top NGC-graded highlight in the auctions is a China 1975 Diplomatic Relation Gold Medal graded NGC PF 65 Ultra Cameo (lot 352), with an estimate of HKD85,000 to HKD100,000 (about $10,900 to $12,700). In a significant milestone for China and the Philippines' foreign policy, the two countries formally established diplomatic relations in June 1975. This gold medal was struck to commemorate the occasion, which marked a turning point in Southeast Asian diplomacy during the Cold War era and opened the door for political, economic and cultural exchanges between the nations. There are only two examples of this NGC-certified rarity in the NGC Census, and this is the finer example of the pair.
