Posted on 5/19/2025
More than 250 rare Canadian banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) are being offered in an ongoing auction presented by Stack's Bowers Galleries. Bidding is already underway for the May 2025 World Collectors Choice Online Auction: Canadian Paper Money, which is being held May 30, 2025.
The top lot in the sale is a Canada, Union Bank of Halifax 1909 $5 graded PMG 25 Very Fine (lot 30109), which has an estimate of $25,000 to $45,000. No issued examples of this particular note were known to exist until now, with this being the first confirmed, fully issued example of the last note ever issued by the Union Bank of Halifax. Established in Nova Scotia in 1856, the bank played an important role in the economic development of the region for more than five decades. The year after the issuance of this note, the Royal Bank of Canada absorbed the bank, and the Union Bank of Halifax ceased to exist as an independent institution.
