Goldberg Offers Rare Asian Notes Certified by PMG from Peh Family Collection

Posted on 5/16/2024

The auction in early June features PMG-graded rarities from the Straits Settlements, China and elsewhere.

A Straits Settlements rarity is among nearly 150 notes from China and Southeast Asia that are certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) in an upcoming auction presented by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles. Online bidding is underway for the sale, which represents Part II of the Peh Family Collection and is being held on June 4, 2024.

The top paper money collectible in the auction is a Straits Settlements / British Administration 1898-1901 100 Dollars graded PMG 15 Choice Fine (lot 1492), with an estimate of at least $50,000. The Straits Settlements were a group of British colonies in Southeast Asia in the 19th and 20th centuries that included Singapore. This high-denomination note from early in the history of the Straits Dollar is one of only five of the issued notes with this catalog number in the PMG Population Report.

The Peh Family Collection is a phenomenal group of numismatic rarities that included a 1703 Vigo 5 Guineas that realized $900,000 in January 2024, when the first part of the collection was offered. The current sale also includes a Great Britain 1837 Una and the Lion 5 Sovereign, which is graded by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®), PMG's affiliate that certifies coins, medals and tokens. (It also includes a genuine example and two contemporary counterfeits of the Straits Settlements 1901-24 5 Dollars, which were the subjects of a recent PMG Counterfeit Detection article.)

PMG has encapsulated the notes from the Peh Collection with a special label that highlights their special pedigree. Other PMG-certified notes from the Peh Collection in this auction include:
