PMG-certified World Banknotes in Stack's Maastricht Sale

Posted on 4/22/2024

A rarity issued by the Palestine Currency Board is among the notes expected to realize five figures in a May auction.

A rare note from the Middle East is among more than 600 banknotes from across the globe that are certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) and being offered in an upcoming Stack’s Bowers Galleries auction. Bidding is already underway for the Spring 2024 Maastricht Auction of World Paper Money, which will be held May 9, 2024.

At center stage is a Palestine, Currency Board 1939 £1 graded PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 50557), with an estimate of $20,000 to $30,000. These notes date from the British Mandate that was set up after the Ottoman Empire ceded control of the region at the end of World War I. The PMG Population Report records over 700 examples of this particular catalog number, but only one example is graded higher than this lot. In fact, the PMG Population Report records only seven notes graded higher out of more than 2,500 notes recorded under all catalog numbers from the Palestine - British Mandate.
