Heritage Offers Rare Colonial Counterfeit Detection Sheet Certified by PMG

Posted on 2/16/2024

The counterfeit detection sheet dating to the birth of the United States in 1776 is among dozens of PMG-certified Colonial notes in a February sale.

More than 180 historic notes from the US Colonial period that are certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) are available in an upcoming Heritage Auctions sale. Online bidding is already underway for Heritage's Winter Colonial Showcase Auction, which will be held on February 25, 2024.

One of the top lots in the auction is a July 22, 1776 Continental Currency Counterfeit Detector Sheet $2-$3-$4-$5-$6-$7 graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated (lot 95022) with an estimate of at least $2,500. This partial counterfeit detection sheet was distributed for the purpose of comparing suspect notes of the day, which included intricate emblems and nature prints on each issue. Individual counterfeit detection notes from this era are already scarce, but a sheet of six notes is extremely rare. This is the only example of this six-note counterfeit detection sheet in the PMG Population Report.
