Rare PMG-certified Notes from Qatar & Dubai in World Banknote Auctions Sale

Posted on 1/19/2024

Early Qatar & Dubai banknotes are difficult to find, but several Specimens are available in an auction on January 25.

Several rare Qatar & Dubai notes dating back to a political realignment in the Mideast about 60 years ago are among hundreds of banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) in an upcoming sale. Bidding is already underway in the World Banknote Auctions Currency Sale 54, which is being held January 25, 2024.

The note with the highest estimate in the auction is a Qatar & Dubai ND (circa 1960s) 25 Riyals Color Trial Specimen graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated (lot 54342), with bidding expected in the $15,000 to $20,000 range. The auction also includes Color Trial Specimens of the 10 and 50 Riyals as well as issued examples of the 1 and 5 Riyal notes.

Qatar and Dubai, the largest city in what today is the United Arab Emirates, shared a currency that united the Persian Gulf neighbors in the late 1960s. Their political affiliation lasted until 1971, when both Qatar and Dubai gained independence from the British and decided to go their separate ways. Today, thanks primarily to their energy sectors, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates each have a per-capita gross domestic product that is among the highest in the world. These banknotes are rare and highly collectible due to their historical significance, limited issuance and unique designs.
