A group of four vintage notes with consecutive serial numbers realized $432,000 in a Stack's Bowers auction.

An extremely rare group of vintage Chinese banknotes with consecutive serial numbers soared high in a recent sale presented by Stack’s Bowers. They were among more than 1,000 rarities certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) that were offered in four sessions in the Hong Kong Auction, which was held October 5-6, 2023.

Topping the sale was a group of four China / People’s Republic 1953 10 Yuan notes with consecutive serial numbers, each graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated EPQ (Session B, lot 21057), which realized $432,000. Vintage banknotes with consecutive serial numbers hold a special fascination for collectors. In addition, these notes are by themselves relatively scarce, with the PMG Population Report listing only 36 that have the coveted Exceptional Paper Quality designation, including these four.
