PMG Registry Featured Set: Philippines Specimens

Posted on 8/22/2023

This month’s featured set belongs to Pinoynotes – Christopher Gibbs.

One of the great aspects of the PMG Registry is the wide variety of sets that represent countries and territories both large and small. PMG Registry sets such as the 100 Greatest US Notes set as well as Canada and Great Britain sets can be quite extensive and, as such, very costly to compile a definitive collection. Smaller sets appeal to a wide range of collectors from all over the world for various personal reasons. One collector, Pinoynotes – Christopher Gibbs, has a passion for all notes from the Philippines. He has been working diligently to build several sets, including this unique set, a Bangko Sentral Ng Pilipinas, 1969-Date, Specimen set found here.

Pinoynotes has taken the time to upload many details about these notes, and the set description is extensive and informative. He includes printer information, serial number patterns and a wealth of interesting observations:

“Many people are confused by the term ‘De La Rue Specimen.’ A specimen note might be printed by TDLR, but only the specimen notes with a red or black oval De La Rue overprint (see note p152s2) are classed as ‘De La Rue Specimens’ ... The third (set), the ‘Collector Set’ released by Franklin Mint, has the Marcos - Licaros signature combination, with a Maltese cross as a prefix for each denomination...”

Started at the end of 2022, this set also offers comments and images for all 27 notes. Be sure to check out the gallery, which boasts many PMG Top Pops, here. The gallery offers a glimpse at the evolution of the artwork involved in these notes; the color scheme and detail have developed over the years, featuring lovely artistic renderings of influential people and places in the history of the Philippines.

Thank you, Pinoynotes – Christopher Gibbs, for sharing your incredible collection of Specimen notes. We look forward to seeing what updates you have in store for us with this set and your other Philippines sets. The 2023 PMG Registry award deadline is approaching soon, but there is still time!
