Two PMG-certified US Banknotes Lead Stack's Bowers Auction

The notes are among more than 1,900 PMG-certified banknotes offered in the August 2023 sales.

A large and impressive selection of US and world banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) is being offered in a series of Stack’s Bowers sales. They include several PMG-certified notes likely to realize six figures in the Global Showcase Auction – Session 2 – U.S. Currency Part 1. In all, over 1,900 PMG-certified banknotes are being offered in this and other sessions (Session A, Session D, Session 7, Session 12 and Session H), which conclude August 14-23, 2023.

The top PMG-certified note in the sale is a rare 1934 $5,000 Federal Reserve Note (Chicago) graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated EPQ (Session 2, lot 20339) which has an estimate of $250,000 to $350,000. According to the PMG Population Report, PMG has graded 40 examples of this Friedberg variety, with only two earning this grade and none graded higher.

Also featured is a stunning 1928 $100 Gold Certificate graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (Session 2, lot 20348). Gold certificates are highly prized among collectors, especially in uncirculated grades. PMG has graded more than a thousand examples of this Friedberg number, but this particular note is one of only three to earn a grade this high. It has an estimate of $125,000 to $175,000.
