High-grade Malaysia Banknote Certified by PMG in Monetarium Sale

Many rare and collectible notes from Southeast Asia are being offered in an August Monetarium sale.

Many rare and collectible banknotes from Southeast Asia, certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®), are being offered in a Monetarium Auction, which opened on June 20, 2023, and continues until August 6, 2023.

Among the most interesting items is a Malaysia 1976-81 Bank Negara 1000 Ringgit graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 2049) with an estimate of 60,000 to 65,000 SGD (about $45,000 to $48,000 USD). It is the highest graded example of this note in the PMG Population Report, and features Serial Number A/1 555168. It is unsurpassed by any of the more than 250 other examples in the PMG Population Report of this note, which bears the highest denomination ever issued by Malaysia.

Another example of this note (lot 2048), also graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ, is included in this auction, but without a Fancy Serial Number and with an estimate of 50,000 to 60,000 SGD (about $37,000 to $45,000), as well as one graded PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 2050) with an estimate of 30,000 to 36,000 SGD (about $22,000 to $27,000).

  • a Malaysia 1967 Bank Negara 50 Ringgit Replacement/Star graded PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 2030) with an estimate of 18,000 to 22,000 SGD (about $13,000 to $16,000)
  • a Singapore 1980 Board of Comm. of Currency, 10,000 Dollars graded PMG 50 About Uncirculated (lot 2169) with an estimate of 14,000 to 16,000 SGD (about $10,500 to $12,000)
  • a Malaysia 1972-76 Bank Negara 10 Ringgit Replacement/Star graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated (lot 2047) with an estimate of 12,000 to 15,000 SGD (about $9,000 to $11,000)
  • a Malaysia 1995 Bank Negara 1000 Ringgit graded PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 2096) with an estimate of 12,000 to 14,000 SGD (about $9,000 to $10,500)
  • a Malaysia 1972-76 Bank Negara 1000 Ringgit graded PMG 35 Choice Very Fine (lot 2040) with an estimate of 12,000 to 13,000 SGD (about $9,000 to $9,800)
  • a Malaysia 2012 Bank Negara 100 Ringgit Solid #4’s graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 2118) with an estimate of 12,000 to 13,000 SGD (about $9,000 to $9,800)
